Lots of exciting developments both inside and outside the lab!

We have a fiscal sponsor! The Film Collab is an amazing organization that offers both fiscal sponsorship and manages festival runs and distribution. We're so proud to have been accepted into the family and are excited to be able to offer a charitable, tax-deductible contribution option to supporters. http://www.thefilmcollaborative.org/fiscalsponsorship/projects/carbon

It takes a village and, let us tell you, our village is really stepping up. We've received incredible support around here so, if you're ever in Metuchen, NJ, make sure to stop by and give these folks a high five.

This summer our director, Priscilla Anany, will be filming with the Global Shea Alliancein Ghana, Burkina Faso, Mali, Nigeria and Benin to tell the stories of the women who farm and process the Shea butter used by some of the world's top consumer goods companies.

Carbon writer/producer/lead, Claire McClanahan, has been writing and developing a new TV series called, Real M*thr, with Vanessa Stewart and Tracie Laymon. Real M*thr has advanced to the second, and final, round of the Sundance Episodic Lab! It's a killer project so we're keeping our fingers crossed it goes all the way. Between filming Carbon and spending a week at the Sundance ranch, this Fall is shaping up to be one for the books.

Friend of the lab, Chip Hourihan, just had a new film come out on Netflix last week. The movie is called "Amateur" and was directed by Ryan Koo (founder of No Film School) and stars Michael Rainey Jr. from Power and Josh Charles from The Good Wife. It's a timely and important film about the dark side of NCAA recruiting. Check it out!

Carbon Producer, Marisa Vitali, has been continuing the conversation of recovery with college screenings of her award winning film, GRACE, throughout NY state www.grace-the-move.com. More screenings will be coming up in May, we'll keep you posted on that. To get a sense of the brains, passion, and beauty of this amazing human you have to listen to her inteview about the film last week.

In addition to her extensive work as a producer, Marisa has also found time to appear in several episodes of the popular soap, The Bold and the Beautiful.

An Odyssey Ends...An Adventure Begins

It's hard to believe but, in a few short hours, this whole crowdfunding adventure comes to an end.

So what's on the other side? Three main things will happen next:

CASTING DIRECTOR & CASTING: We've reached out to a bunch of Casting Directors. We'll be making a selection soon. Then we get to make lists of actors we want to put offers out to, set up auditions, find our cast...GAH!

SCRIPT REVISIONS: Writing is rewriting, y'all. We're not making any big structural changes, just refining and continuing to make the science portrayal better and better.

HIRE AN ENTERTAINMENT LAWYER: This might sound like a dry, unexciting step. But, honestly, it's one of the things I'm most excited about. A few months ago I sent an email to my fellow incubator-ites at Big Vision Empty Walletlooking for recommendations. A bazillion of them sounded off about the same guy and firm. I've talked to him on the phone. We're meeting with him in a couple of weeks. I cannot WAIT to tell you all about it.

That's it for now. Cool stuff is coming down the line and I cannot WAIT to get on the other side of this campaign so I can spill :)

Naming the puppy (or, picking a shoot date and raising the moolah)

A wise person once said, "You can't call yourself a filmmaker until you've actually made a film." Well, ain't that the truth! So after months of development and preparation Carbon will finally begin principal photography in October 2017!!!

To get there we'll be continuously fine tuning the story and script, planning investor events and gearing up for our first crowdfunding campaign which will launch in a little over a month. Not to mention reaching out to name talent, casting, staffing, etc. Lots to do!

Our crowdfunding campaign will take place on our favorite platform, Seed & Spark. We LOVE this company for many reasons not least of which is their founder, Emily Best, who is kickass leader and mom. With Seed & Spark, Emily and her team have created a platform that offers incredible support and resources for filmmakers and is commited to diversity in filmmaking, a cause close to our hearts.

We have a lot to learn while we get this film on its feet and into your hands, so we're going to be meeting with filmmakers, scientists, and other experts in relevant fields and then sharing everything we learn in a short form digital video series. So stay tuned for that!

It's going to be an exciting few months. We are so happy to have you with us on this journey!
